Three days left until the Baby New Year. But will 2009 really bring a new beginning?

According to the Fast Money traders there’s a lot left to finish before you can expect a fresh start.

Take General Motors for example. The current bridge loan only gets them to March, then it’s anybody’s guess what happens.

And in the housing market , the traders don’t expect a bottom until at least June.

Then there’s the $1 trillion stimulus plan promised by Obama. That probably won't boost GDP until the first quarter of 2010.

So all you can do right now is build your watch lists and wait.

But once the financial system stabilizes, seeds of the next bull market could take root. And when they do one area the fast money is watching is energy and natural resources.

“I think in 3 to 5 years energy and natural resource stocks will be trading higher," says Joe Terranova. "And eventually Africa will resurrect itself and that alone will create demand for energy and natural resources.”

Exxon Mobil , Schlumberger , and Freeport McMoRan are three stocks Terranova likes. “There still is a fundamental story underneath all these names of how you grow future supplies. But again these stocks are a longer term story.”

Terranova suggests getting long over the next 12 to 18 months.

And if that doesn’t do it for you Guy Adami says, “nat gas stocks such as Chesapeake Energy look attractive to me over 3 to 5 years.”
