Highest Grossing Movie Weekends
The highly anticipated blockbuster "Avatar" helped set records over the 2009 holiday weekend, generating $75.62 million in revenue, which contributed to the biggest total box office numbers in American history. Along with revenue from the newly released Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks, the weekend of December 25-27, 2009 exceeded $259 million for the top 12 films in theaters, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
In the wake of the record breaking weekend, BoxOfficeMojo compiled a list of the all-time highest grossing weekends for Hollywood films, which are typically summer or winter weekends with several highly anticipated releases hitting US theaters. The totals include the 12 highest grossing movies from each weekend, which represents a significant majority of total box office revenues in any given weekend.
