Facebook is trying to fix a glitch that was exposing users' private chats to some of their friends on the social media site, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Ironically, the bug was found embedded in a Facebook "privacy" feature that allowed members to view what their profile page would look like to others after either hiding or making public specific items.

The issue arose when users tried to preview their own profiles. Some noticed they were able to view their friends' live chats. Reports of this security breach began on Wednesday.

Facebook told CNBC that the bug was in effect for a "limited amount of time," and that the company has disabled Facebook Chat for the time being as it works on the problem.
