Question 4 of 10

What early feminist is credited with inventing the term "birth control"?

  1. Emma Goldman
  2. Margaret Sanger
  3. Nelly Roussel
  4. Susan B. Anthony
Correct!

Margaret Sanger is credited with coining the term "birth control." She did so early in the 20th century in the pages of her monthly newsletter, "The Woman Rebel." The newsletter bore the slogan "No Gods and No Masters," and stated that each woman should be the sole power and final authority over her own body. While these statements are as mainstream as it gets today, in 1914 she was indicted under postal obscenity laws and was forced to flee the United States and move to England.
