As 2010 comes to a close, Virtus Investment Partners' Joe Terranova provided his top 3 trades for 2011:
Apple: The technology giant could sell 40 million iPad devices next year, said Terranova. Its stock could go to $400 a share and may become the largest company in the world in terms of market capitalization. He's long this name.
U.S. dollar : Although Treasury yields are backing up, Terranova said there's resistance overhead. When you look at the 10-year average for U.S. Treasury yields, 4.33 is the resistance level and that's where the yield will run out of steam. If that happens, the Federal Reserve will have to remain "extremely accommodative." Continued unemployment in the new year is also likely to put pressure on the dollar.
"I expect in 2011 the U.S. dollar to revisit the Mar. 17, 2008 40-year low down at 78.69," said Terranova. "The dollar's going down the drain."
Oil: Terranova prefers oil over both copper and gold. He expects production in the Gulf of Mexico to lose 100,000 barrels of oil a day. At the same time, demand will only increase, especially from China. To play it, he likes CVR Energy , a Sugar Land, Texas-based refiner. He also likes Alberta Oil Sands, Canadian Natural Resources and Complete Production Services . He's long these names.
