“To be able to come into work every day and build things that help a billion people stay connected with the people they care about every month, that’s just unbelievable,” Zuckerberg said in an exclusive interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer.

Since its inception there have been 140.3 billion friend connections, 219 billion photos uploaded and 1.13 trillion likes, according to a statement posted on Facebook’s web site.

“Thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you,” Zuckerberg said on the site. “Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.”

“I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”

The website also highlighted that the median age of users currently joining the social network is 22 years old, and most come from Brazil, India, the U.S., Mexico and Indonesia.

Facebookalso sees 600 million people now access the site via their mobile phones.
