NEW YORK-- As many as 13,000 people received steroid shots suspected in a national meningitis outbreak, health officials said Monday. Those injected in joints are not believed to be at risk for fungal meningitis, said Curtis Allen, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since the Sept. 25 recall of three lots of a steroid produced by a Massachusetts company, the outbreak has spread to nine states and 105 patients, with eight people killed, the Centers for Disease Control said.
