Google is delaying full year-end bonus checks by a few months, simultaneously demonstrating a keystone tenet of household finance: Don't count on money you don't have in hand.

"If you know money's coming down the road, you can think [about] what you might want to do with it, but don't have it spent before it gets there," said Carolyn McClanahan, a certified financial planner and director of financial planning at Life Planning Partners, based in Jacksonville, Florida.
