Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled two new iPhones, a long-awaited smartwatch and a mobile payment system on Tuesday, but that didn't stop companies from trying to get in on the tech giant's spotlight.

Brands (some better than others) activated their real-time marketing teams to share tweets throughout Apple's big reveal in an attempt to hijack the event—not the first time attempts have been made.

Still, Apple dominated Twitter's Trending Topics section all day. More than 2.4 million tweets about #AppleLive were shared on Twitter, according to the social networking company's data team.
