With the release of the new iOS 8 operating system, hundreds of apps have just gotten impressive new updates and design tweaks that make the content look crisp on the new retina HD displays.

Here are a few standouts for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus recommended by Jennifer Jolly, tech columnist for USA Today.

VSCO Cam takes the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus camera to the next level, Jolly said. The free app gives users advanced shutter speed and camera controls specifically made to work with iOS 8. New features include manual focus, white balance and exposure compensation. Photos taken with the app can also be published to the VSCO platform for sharing. "Things those professional photographers do with an expensive and fancy camera can now be done with an iPhone," Jolly said.

Hipmunk app is another one that received an update for the new iPhones. Its simple display makes it easy for users to find the best deal on travel options from flights, trains, hotels and even alternate accommodations. "Even though the free app has been around for a while, it already supports what Apple calls "Handoff," which allows users to look at a search on their laptop and then pick up that search at exactly where they left off on their iPhone or iPad," Jolly said.

However, Hipmunk will still have to compete with other travel apps, including Orbitz and Kayak.

For video gamers, Jolly said "Beach Buggy Racing" and "TouchFish" are two great options. These games are not only free for iOS devices; their graphics are the same quality as desktop, she said.
