Attention "Back to the Future" fans: Lexus is showcasing a real-life hoverboard.

The car company, the luxury branch of Toyota Motors, on Tuesday teased a video online that shows what appears to be a hoverboard floating above concrete, with steam pouring from vents. The video ends just as a skateboarder places his foot on top of it.

Lexus named the hoverboard "Slide." The company says the Lexus Hoverboard uses magnetic levitation to "achieve amazing frictionless movement." The technology behind the device involves liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, Lexus said.

But don't expect the hoverboard to hit stores any time soon. Lexus told CNBC that it would not be selling hoverboard. They're only being used for an upcoming global ad campaign.

Lexus said a European company developed two prototypes for the campaign.

Ted Murphy, chief executive of IZEA, a company that connects brands and social media, said on CNBC's "Tech Bet" that Lexus is using the prototypes to prove itself as a thought-leader.

"All they're trying to do is prove is they're thinking about things in a new way, that they're innovative," he said.

The buzz got the Lexus name out there. Mentions of Lexus or Hoverboard spiked "20x" on Twitter on Tuesday, or more than 1,000 per hour, according to Murphy.
