The cheese is gouda, and the burger is customized. No, this isn't a white tablecloth restaurant. This is McDonald's.

Some McDonald's in the Texas Panhandle area now offer an unexpected new premium ingredient on the menu: smoked gouda cheese. McDonald's national cheese offerings are more on the conventional side, such as white cheddar, American and jack cheese.

The new item is part of McDonald's test of the Create Your Taste concept, which lets customers customize their sandwiches using a self-ordering kiosk or tablet. About 60 locations in the U.S. are currently testing the concept.

"The Gouda is a cheese option in that area at that Create Your Taste test restaurant. The intent is to try the Gouda on the Create Your Taste burger, however it would be up to the individual owner/operator if they offer Create Your Taste toppings on other menu items," said McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb in an email.

Gouda follows kale and 100 percent sirloin beef as the latest premium item on the menu. It reflects McDonald's attempts to push the envelope with ingredients customers might not expect at the Golden Arches, as CEO Steve Easterbrook attempts to turn it in to a "modern and progressive burger company."
