CNBC Europe Leads Business News Channels According to Latest EMS Results

CNBC EUROPE LEADS BUSINESS NEWS CHANNELS ACCORDING TO LATEST EMS RESULTS

• CNBC Europe breaks through six million viewers a month
• More CEOs watching than ever before
• Business news increases in popularity

CNBC Europe is the most watched pan-European business and financial news channel, according to the latest EMS survey. The results, out today, show that the channel has grown its weekly, monthly and annual audience figures and now reaches 2.8 million viewers a week (+4.8 per cent), 6.2 million viewers a month (+10.4 per cent) and 10.2 million viewers annually (+9.4 per cent).

CNBC Europe saw particularly strong growth amongst its key audience group of CEOs, which increased by 33 per cent (weekly) and by 50 per cent (monthly). There was also significant growth amongst CFOs, which increased by 31 per cent (weekly) and by 58 per cent (monthly).

Mick Buckley, President and CEO of CNBC Europe said, “Our strategy of providing strong editorial coverage, engaging content, interviews and analysis with the CEOs and business leaders that count continues to reap dividends. With the business news market continuing to grow, it is our intention to remain the most watched business news channel in Europe and the world over. I’m pleased with our continuing upward growth in viewers and in the gains made amongst our core senior business leader audience.”

The channel also saw a strong growth performance in France and Switzerland where its annual viewing figures were up by 40 per cent and 22 per cent respectively. Germany also experienced solid growth, up 10 per cent annually. New data in this wave of research from Central and Eastern Europe adds an additional 350,000 weekly viewers from Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, which takes CNBC Europe’s total European weekly audience above three million.

Business News Growth, while General News stagnates
The EMS results showed that the business and financial news sector continues to grow, despite the industry trends of media fragmentation and declining audiences. The growth is most marked when compared with general news channels, clearly demonstrating the strength of the business news sector. Combined audience figures for business news channels grew by 12% weekly audience; 14% monthly and 11% annually; compared with only 4% weekly; 5% monthly and 3% annually for general news channels.

“All in all, the figures show that business television is in a strong position and that there is a high demand for our programming over general consumer news,” added Buckley.
