Osama Bin Laden's death proved a huge boost to Twitter — driving unprecedented traffic. The stats are stunning — Twitter just announced that last night saw the highest sustained rate of Tweets ever — an average of 3,000 per second from 10:45 pm EST to 2:20 am EST.
The numbers are even higher than first reported.
At 11 pm there were 5,106 tweets per second, and when President Obama finished his remarks there were 5,008 Tweets per second. Twitter is the new, global water cooler. It's where people go when they're looking for news and when they want to share news with their friends.
How do last night's tweets compare?
This year's Super Bowl peaked at 4,064 Tweets per second (TPS), and sustained 3,000-plus TPS for just twenty minutes. Friday's Royal Wedding reached a peak of 3,966 TPS at 4 pm London time.
Japan is responsible for some Twitter records — the most TPS was set on New Years Eve when Japanese users sent 6,939 TPS. And the day after the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami usage peaked at 5,530 TPS, one of five times that day when usage topped the 5k mark.
