When it comes to tipping, venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya keeps things simple.

The Social Capital founder and CEO usually tips at least 100 percent, he tells the hosts of CNBC's "Squawk Box."

"Look, I got lucky, so I feel like I should just pay it forward," says the sharp investor, whose early investments include Slack, Box and SurveyMonkey. Palihapitiya is also an original member of the Facebook management team and co-owner of the Golden State Warriors.

He doesn't tip 100% every time, regardless of circumstances, he says: "If it's bad service, no, but most of the time. Because they just have such joy on their face and it's wonderful."

The venture capitalist also enjoys greasing the maitre d'. "Oh, I love that," says Palihapitiya, who frequently gives them "a $100 bill, maybe."
