Research shows that entrepreneurs with larger and more diverse networks grow their businesses bigger. Joining the right business organizations can build your network quickly but you need to choose the right group. Athena Vongalis-Macrow, a researcher at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, suggests asking yourself four questions before joining a group:
- Who is in the group? Look for people who not only provide resources, information and knowledge, but have a willingness to share.
- How well does the network connect? In other words, evaluate the frequency and professionalism of the interaction.
- Is there functional communication? Make sure the network offers support that enables you to overcome difficulties.
- At what professional level are the people in the group? For networking to be effective, you want to meet up with some movers and shakers that could help your business.
