On Tuesday, Jeff Bezos announced that he is stepping down as Amazon CEO after 27 years of running the e-commerce giant, during which time he built Amazon into a $1.6 trillion company.

In 1994, Jeff Bezos quit his job at a New York hedge fund and drove across the country to the Seattle suburbs, where he rented a house and started building the company that became Amazon out of its garage. It was there that Bezos first debuted the Amazon website on July 16, 1995 as an online bookstore.

In 2019, that piece of internet history sold for roughly $1.5 million, according to Zillow.

A property listing for a three-bedroom house at 10704 NE 28th Street in Bellevue, Washington billed the home as "the birthplace of Amazon."

Brad Stone's 2013 book "The Everything Store," about the rise of Amazon, includes a job posting from August 1994 in which Bezos lists the home as the mailing address for his new company, originally called Cadabra. The job listing sought software developers "to help pioneer commerce on the internet."

On July 16, 1995, Amazon launched its online bookstore, with the future e-commerce giant's first official sale being a copy of a non-fiction book by artificial intelligence scholar Douglas Hofstadter, called "Fluid Concepts And Creative Analogies: Computer Models Of The Fundamental Mechanisms Of Thought."

A year later, Bezos moved Amazon's 11 employees out of his garage and into the company's second office space in a small nearby warehouse.

The house was totally remodeled in 2001, according to a real estate listing, and the famous garage has also been renovated "and likely doesn't resemble what it looked like when Bezos was there," Sullivan told the Seattle Times

Out back, the house now has a party deck and hot tub.

Bezos never actually owned the property himself. He went on to become the world's richest person, with a net worth of $173 billion, according to Forbes. He owns real estate all over the country now, including a $25 million lake house in nearby Medina, Washington.
