Retail: Watch Today's "Street Signs" Debate on Buying Spree

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.

Tune into "Street Signs" today at 2pm ET. I'll be filling in for the highly-talented Erin Burnett and bringing a bit of my retail world into the show. We'll be debating just whether private equity's buying spree in the retail sector has peaked--or whether it should be peaking.

Given KKR's interest in Macy's as a potential takeout target, we're taking a critical look at whether buyout firms are so hungry to acquire companies with cash flow--that they're overlooking larger dangers to the business. Why? So many analysts have raised the issue of whether Macy's would be a good business to own, given its merchandising issues, if the company sells off its real estate assets.

Private equity firm Permira was willing to pony up serious cash to buyout Valentino--a company whose strength is its own name NOT real estate or underlying assets. But what will it do with the business? Can cash flow be enough to make the investment worth it for Permira? And what are some of the brand names being shopped right now? What will be the next buyout and which names have value.

So, tune into "Street Signs" today at 2pm ET to hear the debate.
