Rival drugstores Rite Aid and CVS Caremark both posted an increase in same-store sales on Thursday.

Rite Aid said sales in its stores open at least a year rose 0.7%, as sales of general merchandise fell.

Total drugstore sales at Rite Aid  for the four weeks ended Sept. 29 rose 52% to $1.99 billion, helped by the acquisition of the Brooks and Eckerd chains.

Pharmacy same-store sales rose 1.3%, while "front-end" sales, or sales of general merchandise like food and bandages, fell 0.5%.

On the other hand, CVS saw strong sales of its general merchandise. The robust demand helped lift its same-store sales 5% last month.

Same-store pharmacy sales rose 4.3% in the five weeks ended Sept. 29, and sales of general, or "front-end," merchandise rose 6.8%.
