The Next Bull

Like fingerprints and snowflakes - no two bull markets are alike.

In the 1980s we had leg warmers and low interest rates. In the 90s we had 90210 and the emergence of the Internet. And in the new millennium we had easy mortgages and Miley Cyrus.

But that was then. Now we’re 12 months and 40 percent into a decline with investors wondering when this angry bear will back down.

Maybe sooner maybe later, but eventually all bears go into hibernation and the next bull will start running. Of course, this next one will likely be green.

You can see its beginnings in the wind farms, photovoltaic cells, nuclear power plants and hybrid cars sprouting up across the nation. Already, solar energy demand is up more than 50 percent since last year and an estimated 5 million green collar jobs are expected over the next decade.

To be sure, lower oil prices have made the green drive seem less urgent and the credit crunch has smaller wind companies unable to secure financing but both presidential candidates plan to make alternative energy a major priority the next four years.

So the next bull you've been waiting for may be an all-natural, tofu-eating Taurus.

How can you trade the trend? Zach Karabell recommends nuclear energy which he thinks is starting to shrug off its negative image. He suggests playing it with, The Shaw Group, Exelon , or Entergy .

Karabell also thinks solar is attractive despite the recent sell-off and his favorite names in the space are JA Solar , LDK Solar , and SunTech .

Pete Najarian agrees with the thesis but he recommends waiting until the companies “show you something.”

Karen Finerman has a completely different perspective. ”I think the easiest way to play green is long oil ,” she says, “because the urgency we had 6 months ago to find alternatives energy is starting to fade.” In other words when oil gets expensive again, there will be a renewed call for alternatives.

There’s an ETF that I like, add Joe Terranova. Look at Market Vectors Glbl Alter. Engy ETF Trst .

And be careful of ethanol, Karabell tells us. Regulatory issues on horizon make corn-based ethanol names dicey at best.
