More than 7,000 LinkedIn members in the United States responded to our most recent survey asking about their level of charitable giving this holiday season.
Here are the full results of the survey (see charts below):

  • Donating the same amount as last year (32% of respondents)
  • Cutting back compared to last year (40% of respondents)
  • Giving more than last year (19% of respondents)
  • I never donate money to charity (6% of respondents)

BY INDUSTRY
Who’s giving less? Consumer goods, venture capital, hospitality and leisure, business servers, real estate, international trade, and HR

  • 56% of respondents in consumer goods are giving less
  • 51% of respondents in hospitality and leisure are giving less
  • 47% of respondents in HR are giving less
  • 45% of respondents in banking are giving less
  • 45% of respondents in automotive are giving less
  • 45% of respondents in marketing and advertising are giving less
  • 45% of respondents in law are giving less
  • 45% of respondents in publishing are giving less

Who’s giving more?

  • 30% of those in the oil and gas industry are giving more; 32% are giving the same as last year
  • 26% of those in defense and space are giving more; 39% giving the same as last year

Who’s giving less? 

  • 46% of people in a HR function giving less
  • 43% of people in a consulting function giving less

Who’s giving more?

  • 33% of PR professionals giving more; 35% donating the same as last year

BY U.S.REGION
Northeast is cutting back the most (45% giving less) while the South is cutting back the least (38% giving less)

Who’s cutting back the most:

  • St. Louis (61%)
  • Miami-Ft. Lauterdale (52%)
  • Orlando (51%)
  • Philadelphia (47%)
  • New York (47%)

Who’s giving the most/cutting back the least:

  • Indianapolis (29% giving more)
  • Phoenix (28% giving more)
