As the decade moves towards its close, CNBC is running a series on the best and worst stocks, commodities, and other asset classes over the past ten years.  Today, we look at the S&P Sector rankings and their underlying winners & losers since December 31, 1999.

Given the rapid rise of globalization and expansion in the BRIC countries, it does not come as a surprise that the best S&P performing sector of the decade is Energy with a gain of 103.6% that has led Southwestern Energy to an explosive increase of 5916% in its share price for the decade.

Despite the S&P 500 tracking a decline of -23% for the past 10 years, 5 out of the 10 sectors are up for the decade 11% or higher including an increase of 32.7% in the Consumer Staples sector.   Trailing in last place is the Telecom Services sector with a loss of -64.4%.
