Interest Rates: A Big Fear in 2010?

As the new decade kicks off, the Fast Money traders are devling deeper into what could be one of the biggest threats to the markets and your money for years to come: Interest rates. To help sort out the situation, Jim Iuorio of TJM Institutional services talks with the traders on how to play these market shaping factors.

With the government ending its purchase of Treasurys, reducing their purchases of mortgage backed securities, and with big spending programs passing through the legislature, the long end of the yield curve stands to be hurt by these actions and rates stand to go up. How do you profit from this? Iuorio suggests the Proshares Ultrashort 20, although he admits it is not a perfect instrument, it is the inverse to the long end of the Treasury curve and should make money if the government maintains its course. He also points out that yields have gone from 320-390 for the last 6 months, and if they go above 390, he expects volatility to spike, so the way to play this is through call options.

Trader Surprise for 2010

Steve Grasso is giving his take on what could be a major surprise in 2010, and it lies in green an alternative energy. He thinks that although this has become a buzzword, the facts don't necessarily support the hype. He sees natural gas being the most profitable part of the energy trade, while solar names may retrace lower in 2010, as they are highly dependent on government subsidies.
