After the bell, published reports suggested that Transocean expected to incur significant fees in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
According to our news partner, the Associate Press, Transocean - the owner of the oil platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico - will lose more than $500 million in revenue from the sunken rig and faces a potentially huge hit to its financial results.
In a regulatory filing the company also revealed that the Justice Department has requested that it preserve information about the explosion that occurred April 20.
Transocean, the world's largest offshore drilling contractor, added in the 73-page filing that it's bracing for negative publicity and new regulations from the incident.
The company is unable to estimate the full impact of the disaster, but the explosion and oil spill should have a "material effect" on its future financial results, Transocean says.
That news comes as Transocean posted an expected decline in first quarter net income.
Taking a closer look at the numbers, first-quarter net profit fell to $677 million, or $2.09 per share, from $942 million, or $2.93 per share, a year earlier.
Revenue dropped 17 percent to $2.60 billion, as the company was forced to set aside rigs during last year's drilling slump.
Analysts had expected profit of $2.10 per share on revenue of $2.65 billion from the world's largest offshore drilling contractor, according to averages on Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S
