Additionally, two non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C., a US Airways focus city, each received a $10,000 grant, for a total of 17 grants distributed this year. Grants are awarded to educational programs for children age 18 and younger that increase achievement for economically disadvantaged and developmentally disabled young people or programs that increase student interest and achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Since the Education Foundation's inception in 1990, more than $4.2 million has been awarded through grants and college scholarships for dependents of US Airways employees. The amount of annual funding is subject to change from year to year and is solely dependent on funds raised in the previous year. Funding sources include contributions from US Airways employees, fundraising events and private donations. In 2012 US Airways Education Foundation fundraisers included the 3rd Annual Philadelphia Suitcase Soiree and the 1st Annual Charlotte Suitcase Soiree, which raised more than $200,000. Funds raised at the 19th Annual Phoenix Golf Tournament on Nov. 2 will also support the programs of the US Airways Education Foundation. Annually, more than $450,000 in scholarship and grants are awarded by the Foundation.

US Airways provides charitable contributions to non-profit organizations in the airline's hubs and focus city through four channels of giving: the Corporate Giving Program, the US Airways Education Foundation, the US Airways Community Foundation and the annual "Hope Takes Flight" campaign benefitting the United Way. In 2012, US Airways and its employees will give more than $6.2 million in cash and travel contributions to non-profit organizations that enrich, educate and engage the communities served by the airline.
