Panel to Discuss Influence of Hispanic Media in Upcoming Election

NORTH MIAMI, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- National media experts will explore the impact of the media on Hispanics, particularly in the upcoming presidential election, at a panel discussion that is part of Florida International University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s (SJMC) Hispanics and the Media: The Emerging Power Conference.

The conference will take place on October 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus. The first in a series of panels will take place in room 221 at the Wolfe University Center at 10 a.m. Topics will include the effect Hispanic and non-Hispanic media have on Hispanic voters’ political knowledge and participation; the growth of Hispanic Media firms; and how Hispanic media has advocated for equal rights, from the 19^th century to the present.

"As Hispanic voters across the country prepare to vote in November’s presidential election, this panel will serve as a platform to discuss the vital role that Hispanic media plays in informing and educating voters about the candidates and their issues,” said Raul Reis, dean of the SJMC.

The scholars on the panel include Federico Subervi, associate professor and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media & Markets at Texas State University-San Marcos; Alan Albarran, associate professor and director of the University of North Texas' Center of Spanish-language Media; Amy Mitchell, deputy director of the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism; Felix Gutierrez, associate professor from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California; and, Mario Diament, associate professor, at the SJMC.
