Oct 12 (Reuters) - Thomson Reuters/University of MichiganSurveys of Consumers' preliminary October consumer sentimentindex rose to 83.1 from 78.3 in the final September report,according to a report released on Friday.

Economists in a Reuters survey expected a preliminaryOctober sentiment index reading of 78.0.
