Weekly unemployment claims surged last week, rising 68,000 and blowing past economists' expectations.
So where did all the jobs go?
States with biggest increase/decrease in claims last week
The chart above shows increases and decreases in claims by state last week. Conditions improved dramatically in California, where there were fewer layoffs in services.
But in places like Ohio and Massachusetts, industrial layoffs rose dramatically.
In total 14 states saw claims fall by more than 1,000, while only five states had claims rise by more than a thousand.
The spike in claims last week also broke a running trend of late.
