Chart of the Day: Cold and getting colder

Mars ain't no place to raise a kid, Elton John once said, but Minneapolis isn't a whole lot better at the moment.

A "polar vortex" has much of the US in the grip of a historic cold snap on Monday, and those parts not getting it today will feel it tomorrow.

Temperatures are well below zero in places like Minnesota—and that's before the wind chill. With the wind chill factored in, some places are 20 degrees colder still.

New Yorkers, Bostonians and the like are not immune either. Temperatures at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday will be 30 to 40 degrees colder than they were at 10 a.m. Monday.

(To see how quickly frostbite can kick in at those temperatures, check out this National Weather Service chart).
