What happened to durable goods in December?

The Commerce Department said new orders fell 4.3 percent in December, a huge disappointment (economists expected orders to rise 1.5 percent).

While shipments excluding transportation and defense goods were largely flat in the month, new orders declined across the board.

The decline was especially pronounced in areas like computer equipment and defense aircraft.
