Days after Facebook said it would acquire messaging service WhatsApp, the company experienced a service outage for several hours.

WhatsApp sent out a Twitter message around 3 p.m. apologizing for service issues, saying it hoped to "be back up and recovered shortly."

It sent an update shortly before 6 p.m. saying its services were restored, though some users still reported issues on the company's Twitter feed.

Some speculated WhatsApp was overwhelmed by traffic following the $19 billion deal.
