Carmakers will now have to include rear-view cameras on all cars under 10,000 pounds, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ruled Monday.

"Safety is our highest priority, and we are committed to protecting the most vulnerable victims of backover accidents-our children and seniors," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a press release.

The ruling will require all vehicles, manufactured on or after May 1, 2018, to have rear cameras.

According to NHTSA, each year there are an average 210 deaths and 150,000 injuries caused by backover accidents. Children under 5 years of age represent 21 percent of deaths, and adults of 70 years of age or older account for 26 percent.
