Just when you thought the pampered pet craze had gone too far, a luxury company has just come up with a new badge of excess: The pawbag.

Pawbags are handbags for dogs. But not just any handbag. Pawbags are miniature replicas of the four-figure, croc-skin and calf's leather designer bags worn by their owners.

"A handbag is a statement of style, and many women want that statement to be seen from head to toe and even on their dog," said Amar Thapen, editor-in- chief of VeryFirstTo.Com, a website that gives members first looks at luxury experiences and trips when they launch.

Very First to Know is teaming up with Forzieri, the online Italian luxury accessories retailer, to sell the bags.

Customers can choose any handbag from Forzieri and have it custom made into a pawbag to carry the dog's treats or other necessities.

For a mere $5,119 you can get a Leonardo Delfuoco Black/Green Croc bag with matching pawbag. The python leather satchel combo will run you $2,742, while the Fontanelli Little Black Handbag will only run you $1,118 for the set.

Yes, people are actually buying them. Orders are especially strong in the U.K. and U.S., with a customer in Sacramento recently buying a Le Parmentier Saffiano Leather Tote and matching pawbag, Thapen said.

To refine its marketing, Very First To polled luxury consumers to find out which dog breeds are the most fashionable.

Topping the list were Labradors, golden retrievers, Dalmatians and miniature schnauzers, while the Dandie Dinmont terrier ranked last.

That all depends, of course, on what kinds of pawbags they're sporting.
