Google's grocery war with Amazon

As Amazon has transformed from a seller of books to an online resource for just about anything from diapers to tech gadgets, Google is accelerating its strategy to offer home delivery from local physical stores.

A Google service lets shoppers buy items from local retail stores through the search engine, which then delivers the goods to consumers from the physical retail store on the same or next day, Re/code reports.

A source familiar with the company's plans says senior Google execs have set aside as much as $500 million to expand the service nationwide, according to Re/code.

Google declined to comment on the size of the investment but made no secret of its ambition.
