Many modern-day fliers fret over finding space in the overhead bin for their carry-ons. Now Alaska Airlines will be the first carrier to get Boeing's new Space Bins, designed to stow six standard-size, carry-on bags — two more than the popular pivot bins currently on some Boeing next-generation 737s. On some planes, that's a 48 percent increase in how many carry-on bags can be stowed.
"It is a pain to worry if there will be room for my carry-on and if I might have to gate-check my bag," said Anna Williams, a frequent-flier with Alaska Airlines. "This sounds like it will make traveling on Alaska easier and more comfortable for everyone and expedite the process of getting on and off the planes." Space Bins open two inches lower than pivot bins, so passenger don't have to lift heavy bags as high. The bins are also deeper, with room for overstuffed bags and odd-shaped items such as guitars. But don't start (over) packing just yet: The new bins won't be on Alaska Airlines planes until late 2015.
