Samsung reveals two new phones, Galaxy Note 4, and Galaxy Note Edge

Samsung unveiled two new devices, the Galaxy Note 4 phablet, and the Note Edge, on Wednesday in New York City.

The new phones feature, among other things, longer battery life and an improved camera, said Ryan Biden, senior director of strategy & operations at Samsung Telecommunications America.

The Note Edge phone has one novel feature, a curved screen that wraps around the edges of the device. The curved edge allows for a different set of information displays, and a different set of apps, independent from the main screen.

The new Note 4 will has a 5.7-inch screen, while the Edge's screen is 5.6 inches. Both can be charged to 50 percent of capacity in half an hour, the company said. Both phones will be pre-loaded with the company's streaming music service, Milk Music. Neither pricing information, nor release dates were announced.

One key feature of the new devices is that is the camera has a wider lens, which allows for more to be captured in a shot.

Bigger, brighter screens are important, as 700 million people look at Samsung screens everyday, said John Pleasants, executive vice president of Samsung Media.

The company also showed a new virtual reality device, called Gear VR, which it worked with Oculus to develop. The described the device as smartphone-powered virtual reality. It's designed to be a companion to the Note 4, and will not work with any other phone.

The new large smartphone comes ahead of Apple's big event next Tuesday, where the company is expected to release a larger iPhone.
