Riddle: How do you get people to talk about a product that you don't want to give visibility to?
Answer: By banning the product.
When the NFL announced a new rule in October banning players from wearing Beats By Dre headphones on game day, fans took to Twitter to voice their discontent with the league's decision. More than 7,500 tweets related to the rule were posted in the 24 hours after it was declared, according to Mashwork, a social media insights firm, with 26% of the reactions expressing "hate."
The league decided to officially ban players from wearing Beats headphones because of a long-term sponsorship deal it signed with device maker BOSE in March.
Apple, which scooped up Beats for $3 billion earlier this year, still has something to smile about, though. Many players continue to wear Beats headphones, both openly and secretly, despite the rule and subsequent $10,000 fines.
Most recently, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick placed masking tape over his Beats headphones to cover the iconic "B" logo. This immensely excited Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine, who said he felt like sending players the masking tape himself.
