'Star Trek' Klingon coming to popular language app

"Star Trek" enthusiasts can soon find Klingon fluency at their fingertips.

Language education app Duolingo will offer a course in the tongue of the fictional "Star Trek" species. Duolingo unveiled the course today and it will be ready in two to three months, said Gina Gotthilf, a Duolingo spokeswoman.

The free service—which has more than 80 million users—builds lessons from crowdsourced translations. Contributors will aid in translating Duolingo's platform to Klingon and tailoring teaching to "concepts they deem important to the Klingon language and culture," Gotthilf said.

The Klingon species appears in media from the original 1960s TV series to the recent film franchise reboot. Its language has spread far beyond official "Star Trek" releases and become "probably the most popular constructed language today," Gotthilf added.

Established Klingon speakers will help design the course. More than 900 people have signed up to be notified when the course is live, Gotthilf said.
