Amazon appears poised for a push into virtual reality video, based on a recent job ad placed by the company.

"Amazon Video is seeking a talented Senior Software Development Manager to lead our virtual reality team," according to the job description. "This team is responsible for building the Virtual Reality experience within Amazon Video."

In addition to enhancing the Amazon video content experience, the company could also use virtual reality technology to enhance the shopping experience. Shopping via virtual reality is a trend that's expected to take off, according to a recent research report.

"Retailers are seeking direct sales opportunities as well as enriching the consumer's experience of the brand using virtual reality," said the report published by J. Walter Thompson Intelligence in November.

Amazon declined CNBC's request for comment on the job posting.
