Women in ETFs, the first organization for women in the exchange-traded funds industry, rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday.

The group marked the start of trading in celebration of International Women's Day, a Mar. 8 event, to promote gender equality and economic empowerment for women.

Members of that non-profit and other women's groups organized to ring bells at 34 different stock exchanges around the globe, according to a New York Stock Exchange press release.

Women in ETFs is a non-profit organization with 1,700 members, including both women and men, according to the group.
