Amazon is launching the Kindle Oasis, the latest addition to its e-reader family, priced at $289.99.

The device is the company's thinnest and lightest to date, weighing 4.6 ounces, 20 percent less than the other models. Measuring 3.4mm at its thinnest point, it's 30 percent thinner than its predecessors.

The eighth-generation Kindle features an ergonomic grip that shifts the center of gravity to the reader's palm, simulating the feeling of holding a traditional book.

"To lean back and read for hours, you need a sanctuary from distraction," Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement. "We want Kindle to disappear, and Kindle Oasis is the next big step in that mission."

As part of its new dual-battery charging system, the Kindle Oasis comes with a removable leather charging cover, which has months of battery life before readers have to recharge it, according to Amazon. A new hibernation mode allows users to reduce battery consumption when they're not using the device.

The Kindle Oasis is available for preorder starting Wednesday and will be shipped within a few weeks.
