Prince William makes history by gracing cover of gay magazine

Prince William has appeared on the cover of the latest issue of U.K. gay magazine Attitude, marking the first time a member of the British royal family has been photographed for the cover of a LGBT+ publication.

The prince met with the magazine and members of the LGBT+ community in May to listen to their experiences of homophobic and transphobic bullying and abuse.

"No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives" the Duke of Cambridge said in a statement published by Attitude.

"The young gay, lesbian and transgender individuals I met through Attitude are truly brave to speak out and to give hope to people who are going through terrible bullying right now."

The timing of the interview is important. Attitude said the issue of the magazine went to press on June 8, only a few days before the attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando in which at least 49 people were killed.

The July issue of Attitude, featuring an interview with the Duke of Cambridge, will hit the newsstands on June 22.
