John Carlin is the Assistant Attorney General for National Security. As AAG, Carlin oversees nearly 400 employees responsible for protecting the nation against terrorism, espionage, cyber and other national security threats.

Carlin joined NSD after serving as chief of staff and senior counsel to Robert S. Mueller III, director of the FBI. A career federal prosecutor, Carlin served as national coordinator of DOJ's Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property program, a cadre of prosecutors specially trained to prosecute cybercrime and intellectual property cases. Carlin earned his JD from Harvard Law School and his BA from Williams College.
