Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday the media is "killing people" by dissuading consumers from using an autonomous vehicle.

The billionaire tech mogul made his comments during Tesla's Wednesday announcement that it is expanding self-driving capability to all vehicles produced in its factory.

He suggested media coverage of autopilot crashes is disproportionate to the number of actual incidents, which he said is "virtually none."

Musk added the new hardware will enable "self-driving," which is different than autopilot. He said the company hopes to do a demonstration drive of full autonomy (no hands on the wheel) from Los Angeles to New York by the end of 2017.
