These are the best sectors to own during Republican sweeps, Bespoke says

With Republicans set to take control of the Oval Office, Senate and House come January, we wanted to provide an update and a little more detail to our B.I.G. Tips report from yesterday highlighting market performance under different political compositions in Washington. As shown in the table below, there have been thirteen prior sessions of Congress where Republicans had full control of Washington (RRR) as they will have in January. Overall, equity market returns have been consistently positive in the two-year sessions as the Dow has averaged a gain of 18.72 percent (median: 16.26 percent) with positive returns ten out of thirteen times. Source: Bespoke Investment Group Looking at when the prior "RRR" sessions have occurred, the vast majority were a long time ago, way back before World War II and even World War I in a lot of cases. Since WWII, however, there have been three prior occurrences, and in each of those prior periods the Dow was up during the period with gains ranging from 16.26 percent up to 39.96 percent over the two-year session. Source: Bespoke Investment Group The table below summarizes sector performance in the three post WWII sessions of Congress where the Republican Party had full control in Washington. The first thing that stands out about these results is that in all three two-year periods, not only was the S & P 500 up, but every sector also traded higher. In terms of relative performance, Materials is the only sector that outperformed the S & P 500 in all three periods, while Energy came close — outperforming in two periods and underperforming the S & P 500 modestly from 1953-1955. On the downside is where it really gets interesting. As shown in the table, both Consumer Staples and Health Care have underperformed the S & P 500 in all three periods shown. While the underperformance of the Consumer Staples sector is not too much of a surprise given its defensive characteristics, the fact that Health Care has underperformed is somewhat ironic. As futures were tanking overnight and earlier this morning, the one sector that held up was Health Care since it had been a specific target of the Clinton campaign on multiple occasions.
