Last week, President Donald Trump announced the U.S would withdraw from the Paris Agreement and commence negotiations to re-enter or renegotiate a new accord.
Under the agreement, reached at the end of 2015, world leaders have committed to making sure global warming stays "well below" 2 degrees Celsius and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Understandably, Trump's decision has not gone down well with some. Here, Sustainable Energy takes a look at the reactions of organizations and groups concerned with the environment.
Helen Clarkson, chief executive of The Climate Group
"This is not the death knell for the Paris Agreement. Businesses, U.S. states and subnational governments globally are showing real commitment and leadership on climate change that will continue regardless of the decisions taken by President Trump."
Annie Leonard, executive director of Greenpeace USA
"This is disgraceful. By withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, the Trump administration has turned America from a global climate leader into a global climate deadbeat."
Rhea Suh, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council
"It's on the rest of us now – state and local officials, business leaders, citizens, educators, consumers, activists and congressional members who grasp the stakes for our future - to keep the promise of Paris alive."
Erich Pica, president of Friends of the Earth US
"The U.S. is going rogue on climate change. The world must unify in treating Trump as a pariah and not as an excuse for inaction."
Carter Roberts, president and CEO of World Wildlife Fund-US
"It's baffling to see our President walk away from Paris, given the potential that climate solutions offer for new markets and new jobs."
Andrew Steer, president and CEO of the World Resources Institute
"This decision is a colossal mistake. It shows a stunning disregard for the well-being of people and the planet. President Trump will now have to answer for walking away from one of the most hard-fought and popular global achievements in recent memory."
Peter Seligmann, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Conservation International
"President Trump's decision... to begin the process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is a setback for the national and economic security of the United States."
Mark Tercek, CEO and president, the Nature Conservancy
"Today's announcement that the U.S. government intends to pull out of the Paris Agreement is short-sighted… Universal action on climate change is the only path to a more secure, healthy and prosperous future."
