GE has announced that it has entered into an agreement with the Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF) to both supply and install 123 wind turbines for what is set to be Australia's largest wind farm. PARF is a partnership between AGL Energy Limited and the Queensland Investment Corporation.
The Coopers Gap Wind Farm is due to be completed in 2019 and will be located 250 kilometers north west of Brisbane, Queensland.
In a statement on Thursday, GE said that the 453 megawatt (MW) wind farm will produce around 1.51 million megawatt hours of renewable energy every year. This would be enough power the equivalent of over 260,000 "average Australian homes" and cut CO2 emissions by 1.18 million tonnes annually.
Breaking the agreement down, GE said that it would deliver 91 3.6 MW turbines and 32 3.8 MW turbines.
According to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, wind energy is the country's fastest growing renewable energy source for electricity production.
"Australia is a great market for wind," Pete McCabe, president and CEO of GE Renewable Energy's Onshore Wind business, said in a statement. "After the U.S., it is GE's second largest region globally for renewable energy," McCabe added. "While we see lots of opportunities in Australia, we need to continue to have policy certainty to drive investment."
