Earnings playbook: Your guide to the reports this week including Disney, PayPal and Beyond Meat

Earnings season is winding down, but there are some buzzy names left to report. Disney and PayPal, along with meme stock AMC Entertainment and crypto exchange Coinbase are all due to report quarterly results this week. CNBC breaks down which companies are slated this week and what to look for in the reports. Monday AMC Entertainment is set to report quarterly results around 4:15 p.m. ET, followed by an investor call at 5 p.m. Last quarter: AMC posted a narrower-than-expected loss but warned of more challenges ahead This quarter: Analysts are expecting massive EPS improvement over the same quarter last year when AMC posted an $8.41 per share loss What CNBC entertainment reporter Sarah Whitten is watching: "Box office trends are improving, but AMC's capital structure continues to worry analysts. The movie theater chain's significant debt load — in excess of $5 billion — has been largely ignored by an influx of new retail investors. These shareholders currently own around 80% of AMC's stock and will likely rally around the company regardless of what it posts for earnings on Monday. While ticket sales have risen in recent months, the domestic box office is not back to its full strength. Investors should key into how AMC plans to generate revenue outside of the traditional theater model." What history shows: AMC stock usually comes out ahead the day after a quarterly report, but last quarter shares shed 6%, according to Bespoke Investment Group. PayPal will reveal results around 4:15 p.m. ET, with an analyst call at 5 p.m. Last quarter: PYPL came in light on revenue and reported profit had dropped year over year This quarter: Analysts are forecasting EPS exactly in line with the year-ago quarter What CNBC technology reporter MacKenzie Sigalos is watching: "PayPal has been expanding its product lineup, and investors will be looking to see whether those efforts have buoyed revenues. The company has added a 'buy now, pay later' platform, plus it's offering cryptocurrency trading and high-yield savings accounts through a partnership with Synchrony Bank. Payment volume through PayPal's Venmo app, which began supporting crypto services in April, will be another key item to look out for on Monday. With its network of 32 million retailers, PayPal's crypto ambitions have positioned the company as a rival to Coinbase, the country's most popular crypto exchange." What history shows: PayPal stock typically fares well around earnings, gaining almost 2% on average, according to Bespoke. The third quarter is the stock's strongest for next-day gains. Tuesday Palantir will release its results around 7 a.m. ET and will host a call with executives at 8 a.m. ET Last quarter: PLTR matched EPS expectations and reported revenue up 49% year over year This quarter: The Street is projecting a nearly 60% EPS downside, though analyst coverage is thin What CNBC technology editor Ari Levy is watching: "Palantir has been steadily reporting year-over-year growth of close to 50% since its IPO in September 2020. Now growth rates are moderating into the 30s and investors are going to want to start seeing a clear path towards sustained profits. Palantir grew up providing high-cost specialized software and services to government agencies. It's been diversifying its business in recent years, building up a substantial base of private-sectors customers as well." What history shows: Palantir has only reported quarterly results as a public company 4 times. Three of those quarters the stock gained more than 8% in next-day trading, but the fourth it sunk almost 13%, according to Bespoke. Coinbase is set to report earnings after market close and will hold an analyst call at 5:30 p.m. ET Last quarter: COIN smashed EPS and revenue estimates following a volatile stretch of crypto trading This quarter: EPS estimates for Coinbase cover a wide range, but they all forecast smaller earnings per share compared with the previous quarter What CNBC technology reporter MacKenzie Sigalos is watching: "Because Coinbase's fate is tethered to the performance of digital assets like bitcoin, investors will want to see how Q3's volatility in the crypto market impacted the company's total trading volume and user growth. Greater crypto adoption among retail and institutional investors, plus portfolio diversification beyond bitcoin and ether over the period are two key items to consider on Tuesday. Headwinds from growing operating expenses to accommodate new demand, as well as increased competition, should also be on your radar." What history shows: Coinbase is reporting its second quarter as a public company. Last quarter the stock gained 3% after the report. Wednesday Disney will release earnings at 4:05 p.m. ET, followed by an investor call at 4:30 p.m. Last quarter: DIS beat estimates across the board and reported U.S. parks returned to profitability This quarter: The Street is estimating a quarterly profit, an improvement from the year-ago quarter's per share loss What CNBC entertainment reporter Sarah Whitten is watching: "Disney investors have become fixated on Disney+ subscriber numbers, and the stock has reflected that in recent quarters. In September, CEO Bob Chapek tried to temper expectations by indicating that the streaming service will add subscribers in the low-single-digit millions on Nov. 10. Don't discount Disney's parks, experiences and products results, though. Before the pandemic and before the launch of Disney+, this segment was the company's biggest profit maker. As U.S. travel restrictions loosen for foreign travelers, domestic theme parks will get a much needed boost." What history shows: It's been a mixed bag for Disney stock around earnings for the last several quarters, according to Bespoke. On average, the stock comes out ahead in next-day gains, but barely. Beyond Meat should release quarterly results after the closing bell, followed by a call with executives at 5 p.m. ET Last quarter: BYND revealed widening losses amid higher costs This quarter: Wall Street sees worsening losses for another quarter before small improvements projected in Q4 What CNBC restaurants reporter Amelia Lucas is watching: "Beyond Meat rattled investors when it lowered its forecast for its third-quarter revenue in October, citing a number of factors like the delta variant and severe weather. Wall Street will be watching for commentary on if those really were short-term interruptions or an indication of a more disturbing long-term trend." What history shows: Beyond Meat stock has a tough track record in next-day trading. The stock has only gained ground after a quarterly report during 3 of 9 quarters as a public company and has posted double-digit sell-offs 4 times, according to Bespoke.
