Leading Market Research Firm Finds the Current Reality of Analytics in Canadian Enterprises - Sponsored by Ideaca

New White Paper Studies the Maturity of Business Intelligence in Canadian Organizations

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ideaca (www.ideaca.com), a Canadian based consulting firm that helps customers through a portfolio of management consulting, advisory, implementation and support services sponsored an IDC whitepaper that provides new insights into the current state of Business Intelligence (BI) as it stands today.

IDC, a leading provider of global IT research and advice, surveyed 100 business and 100 IT leaders from Canadian firms with $100 million or more in revenue. IDC spoke with director, VP, and C-level executives to better understand how businesses were integrating analytics into their competitive strategies.

The results of the survey measured the maturity of BI in Canadian organizations across a number of attributes such as data quality and quantity, BI level of analysis and an internal view of BI. From this research, IDC Canada has developed a maturity model from the data in the study which provides insights into the current state of BI as it stands today.

A few of the study’s key findings include:

  • Canadian organizations are moving past static reports to more sophisticated analytical offerings like what-if and process monitoring analysis. Predictive analytics and automated decision making remains rare.
  • ‘Spreadmarts’ are still a very popular tool for BI and analytics in Canada with over 40% of respondents utilizing them as their main tool. With that said, 35% use enterprise-wide data warehouses or BI services.
  • Mobile analytics is already here with 33% of respondents saying that they are currently using it now or leaning towards investment into it.

“Business Intelligence has been a top technology priority for many years, and this study will help readers understand why,” said Richard Hines, BI Practice Leader and Partner at Ideaca. “Our BI customers have seen dramatic improvements in their decision making. Delivering the right information to the right people for strategic and operational decision making has proven to provide a huge competitive advantage.”

“The market for analytics software is bigger than one might imagine. In Canada, organizations spent $923 million in 2011, 12% more than the previous year,” said IDC Canada’s Research Director Nigel Wallace. “IDC anticipates that by 2015 the Canadian analytics market will be north of $1,200 million, meaning the analytics sector is growing much faster than the software market as a whole.”
