WALL ST OPENS HIGHER ON SPAIN BAILOUT HOPES
U.S. stocks rose at the open on speculation Spain will soon request a bailout, seen by some as the necessary next step to alleviating the euro zone's debt crisis.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 46.20 points, or 0.34 percent, to 13,561.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index
rose 5.77 points, or 0.40 percent, to 1,450.26. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 14.98 points, or 0.48 percent, to 3,128.51.
** ARQULE INC $2.14, down 57.73 pct (0940 ET) The biotechnology company and Japan's Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd
said they will discontinue a late-stage trial of their experimental lung cancer drug after an interim analysis showed it would not meet the main goal of improving overall survival.
** SIRIUS XM RADIO INC , $2.62, up 2 pct (0941 ET)
Bank of America/Merrill Lynch started coverage of the satellite radio operator with a "buy" rating, StreetInsider.com reported.
** ACORDA THERAPEUTICS INC , $26.57, up 4 pct (0941 ET)
The drugmaker will replace outdoor-gear retailer Cabela's Inc on the S&P SmallCap 600 after the close of trading on Oct 4. It will be added to the S&P SmallCap 600 Biotechnology Sub-Industry index.
** CELL THERAPEUTICS INC , $2.68, up 20 pct (0944 ET)
The company said the U.S. health regulator granted an orphan drug status for its treatment of a malignant brain cancer.
** MSCI INC , $29.58, down 17.61 pct (0958 ET)
The investment analysis and market index company said its proxy advisory unit, Institutional Shareholder Services, received a Wells Notice on Sept. 14 related to a whistleblower complaint made against an employee of the unit.
** ILLUMINA INC , $51.82, up 5.8 pct (0945 ET)
British newspaper, The Times, reported that the Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG may place a bid of $60 a share on the gene sequencing company.
Roche declined to comment, while Illumina could not be reached for comments immediately.
** CELGENE CORP , $78.19, up 1.8 pct (0947 ET)
The company said a late-stage trial of its cancer drug Abraxane met its main goal of improving the patient's time of survival without worsening skin cancer, when compared to standard chemotherapy.
** YAHOO INC , Monday close $16.01, up 1.2 pct (0950 ET)
CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer said the Internet company has "real value because it has some really terrific assets", and new Chief Executive Marissa Mayer is committed to unlocking its value.
"That means the stock should go higher. Congratulations, Marissa Mayer, you finally made Yahoo a stock that's worth buying," he said. Mayer, who gave birth to a baby boy on Monday, is expected to join work in a couple of weeks.
** EXPRESS INC , $12.31, down 18 pct (0950 ET)
The apparel chain said its third-quarter earnings would miss forecast as sales trends weakened in September.
** ZUMIEZ INC , $28.20, up 2.5 pct (0952 ET)
The action sports apparel and equipment retailer reported comparable store sales for September that beat Wall Street view as it sold its products at higher prices.
Comparable store sales for September were up 5.6 percent, beating a 3.2 percent growth expected by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
** PETSMART INC , $69.23, up 2.5 pct (0953 ET) The company replaced Sunoco Inc in S&P 500.
** ON SEMICONDUCTOR CORP , $6.24, up 1.8 pct (0955 ET)
ThinkEquity LLC upgraded the power-management chipmaker to "buy" from "hold", citing growth opportunities from automotive infotainment and Chinese handset markets.
** MOSAIC CO , $56.25, down 3 pct (0955 ET)
The fertilizer producer reported an 18 percent fall in quarterly profit due to drops in prices and volumes of phosphate, a key farming nutrient.
** MILLENNIAL MEDIA INC , $14.22, down 1.45 pct (0958 ET)
The mobile advertising company said Yahoo Inc's former chief marketing officer Mollie Spilman will join the company as its marketing chief and executive vice president.
** KRONOS WORLDWIDE INC , $14.38, down 2.6 pct (0958 ET)
The titanium dioxide product maker released preliminary third-quarter results below market estimates hurt by lower volumes.
The company, whose products are used in the production of paint, plastics, laminate and paper, said it expects segment sales to fall to between $35 million to $40 million from nearly $160 million last year.
** PVH CORP , $93.80, up 1 pct (1000 ET)
The apparel retailer raised its full-year profit forecast ahead of its meeting with Wall Street analysts on Tuesday, citing strength in its Tommy Hilfiger business in North America as well as its Calvin Klein line of clothing.
** ACUITY BRANDS INC , $59.42, down 5.8 pct (1000 ET)
The lighting fixture maker's fourth-quarter results missed market estimates, hurt by soft demand in North America.
